Conversion Optimisation - Boosting Business Performance

The internet has evolved from being a mere medium of expression and a network of computers to a vast resource of knowledge and an immense potential for marketing and business, a phenomenon that has led to the concept of conversion optimisation. The era of e-commerce and internet marketing has led to something much more than what was initially thought possible of the internet. Conversion optimisation is the process that has been deliberately designed to work on the process of lead generation and conversion of leads into actual sales and results for business. And it is high time that businesses and those responsible for maximising the performance of websites took note of the power of conversion optimisation, utilised the immense potential that it offered in terms of understanding customers and their motivations, and ensured that businesses gained invaluable insights about customers as well as improved their efficiency through optimal use of their websites.

The power of conversion optimisation lies in the ability of businesses to develop deep insights about their customers and their behaviour rather than being carried away by isolated instances that may not reflect actual behaviour by customers. Businesses that go by such isolated instances that are not grounded in the reality of consumer behaviour would not only waste scarce organisational resources into non-productive activities but would also make the management take its focus away from the actual issues that would translate into productive efforts and profitability. Conversion optimisation works out the basics in terms of website layouts, text contents, image positions and a whole lot of combinations to see how web traffic behaviour changes with changes in website content and how they could lead to better conversion of traffic into actual sales and productive transactions.

The idea is not about investing heavily on attracting large quantities of fresh traffic but by focusing management efforts on initiatives that would reduce visitor bounce rates. Conversion optimisation works by observing conversion rates of existing traffic, creating a prediction model to see how changes to the website structure and design would affect the way traffic behaved in terms of conversion into productive transactions and optimising the website to ensure better conversion rates. All the effort at website promotion, search engine optimisation and traffic attraction would not make much business and economic sense unless customers who visited the site cared to put their money where their clicks were. Business is all about returns on investment, and there may not be much return unless Conversion optimisation came into play.

How SEO Courses Can Help Your Business

Search engines are a powerful tool for finding relevant websites online. Having a high search engine rank is incredibly important if you want to raise your website's profile and generate more sales. Search engine optimization (SEO) works with the complicated algorithms that search engines like Google use, and it can help you to boost your website's rankings. Enrolling on a SEO course is an effective way to learn how to use SEO.

So what is a SEO course?

Most SEO courses are internet based but the training itself is done in person. The layout will depend on the training company you choose. Some are set up as workshops where small classes of around 6 people come to learn key skills. Others companies send a SEO expert to your office or workplace.

The duration and content of each course will also depend on the provider. Usually individual courses last for one day, and will be suited to a specific level of experience. Common SEO course titles include 'Introduction to SEO', 'Intermediate SEO', 'Expert SEO' and more specialized subjects like 'Google analysis'. You may need to do 2 or 3 courses to reach your preferred level of skill.

What skills are taught?

A range different SEO skills, strategies, and techniques will be covered so that you come away with a variety of tools to use. Skills like link building, getting keywords indexed, Google algorithms, and website optimization are taught in an easy to understand way. You also learn to recognize Google's ever changing main ranking factors. You will be taught to analyze what you competitors are doing and told how to learn from it.

The benefits of a SEO course

In the current economic climate, SEO is becoming ever more important. Website rank has a huge influence on the traffic coming to your site. Websites that appear on the first page of Google search results get significantly more visitors than those on following pages. Of the sites that appear on the first page, the top 3 websites are the most popular. Getting to your website to this position will have an immense positive impact on your sales.

The courses do not just teach you skills relevant to the current time. They understand that the internet, like any other market place, is continually evolving. They teach you the techniques which allow you to understand and adapt to a changing online landscape. This means that you can ensure your websites rank for years to come.

Possible alternatives

Some businesses choose instead to hire a link building company to SEO optimize for them. This has the advantage of requiring less time on the part of you and your employees. However, these services can only get the rank you require for a set amount of time. When the search factors which search engines use change, your website is likely to drop in rank and you will need to invest in the service all over again.

SEO courses are a sustainable solution to search engine optimization. When looking for the right course, choosing one based purely on price is unwise. Try to select a company that balances affordability with quality teaching practices.

Taking this into account, many businesses are seeking the help of SEO agencies to provide them with deep linking SEO services for their company's website. If you are interested in optimizing your website, it is important that you learn the different methods that can help you optimize the site.

To help you make your task a little easier, try using the various search engines to locate an SEO service company. Once you locate some of them, you can compare their services. In this way, you will be able to know which agency can provide you with the required deep linking optimization and which can help your website bring in the traffic for you. This process is ideal for creating back links for your site. If you are interested in making a difference when it comes to the visibility of your company and getting a good share of the online market, then you need to tap the services of a reliable SEO agency. They have experts who can create back links to the inner page of your website. This will help you get a better page ranking from the various search engines.

Many people only give their home page for back linking. They are unaware of the fact that if the inner pages are given a deeplink then the site will rank higher. For a company to get a good flow of traffic, it is ideal for them to take a look at some of the SEO agencies which can give them reliable deep linking with the required keywords. These agencies offer their clients with several packages and it is up to them to select a suitable type. The professionals at these companies can also guide clients in choosing the right package.

It is very important that you identify an agency that can help you to get the required number of back links for your inner page SEO service. To ensure this is done effectively, it is ideal to make sure the keywords you select are not only on the home page, but even on the inside pages. That is, if you select two or more keywords for a single page, it is advisable to select another set for the next page. In this way, you will have many keywords to create a deep link for various pages of your site. After having understood the basic idea of the usage of keywords, the next step is how to locate these SEO agencies. To do this, SEO websites provide special services that cater to companies which require deep linking optimization for their websites. It is important to note that a few of these companies can give you back links that are sure to boost your website's rating.

Internet Business Failure - Mistakes Done When Applying SEO Services

The internet has so many businesses and companies on it. Many people started these businesses and companies with an aim of making a profit. However, they haven't been able to market themselves well and some are even regretting why they even started. There are some who started and gave up along the way. The reason behind this is the lack of knowledge on SEO services. It would be good if we first knew what SEO is.

SEO is the acronym for the phrase Search Engine Optimization. This means optimizing your website for search engines. A search engine is a tool that you use to help you get information. An example that you may know is Google. Optimization deals with carrying out certain activities and changes to make something suitable. So, in essence, search engine optimization means carrying out certain changes and activities to your online website so that it can be suitable for search engines.

There are some people who have actually implemented some of the SEO services but haven't been able to reap the benefits. Here are probable reasons why your implementation of SEO services failed:

Overuse of keywords - This is a major problem with many websites. You will find that people use a certain keyword too many times in their websites. For example, if your website is about African dishes, you will find this phrase repeated quite a number of times in the information provided in the website. Search engines usually flag these websites and penalize them. It is like their trying to cheat the search engines by providing it with this keyword many times. So if your website isn't doing well, check on the number of times you have used the keyword.

Inadequate and irrelevant information - This could be another reason why SEO services haven't worked for you. It is possible that your website only has one or two paragraphs about what you are offering. When search engines are looking to prioritize sites, they look for sites that provide the users with adequate and relevant information. Using the earlier example, if your website is about African dishes but information on your website is about African jewelry, it makes your website irrelevant.

Unspecific Niche - Another reason why SEO services could have failed for you is because you want your website to be a 'jack of all trades.' For example, you may get that your website is talking about African dishes, on another page is talks about African jewelry or and yet on another page it talks about African flights. Although the underlying theme is 'African' those are 3 different niches. It would be best to have each niche on its own website. Let your website be specific to one activity.

Using the right SEO Services will get directed traffic to your website. You can always get a good SEO Service Company to work on your website so that it can do well on the internet.

Is It Time to Create a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Plan?

I'm one of those organized people you meet every now and then, someone who makes lists and outlines. After I participated in a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) webinar, the next logical step, at least in my mind, was to create a plan. And I did.

My plan is written from the standpoint of someone who doesn't know much about computers. I can write thousands of words in record time, but since I was never trained in computers, my knowledge is limited to on the job training. Still, I thought I could benefit from a plan and here are its basics.

Know how SEO works. Chris Templeton, of Internet Influence, started the webinar by defining SEO as a program designed to improve search results and readership. In short, this approach makes it easier for people to find me -- and you -- on the Internet.

Apply the basics. I decided to start simply, and increased the number of key words and phrases in my articles. Adding links and "freebies" are other steps I've taken and I hope they get results.

Upgrade key words. An article on the wefconf.com website, "List of Best and Worst Practices for Designing a HighTrafficWebsite," ranks key words according to their effectiveness. Key website words receives a high rating, and so does inserting key words in headings. Adding links from similar websites also ranks highly and is something I'm just starting to do.

Learn the jargon. Since I'm not a "techie," I have a limited computer vocabulary. But I'm working on this and try to learn new words each week. This takes effort but, in the long run, I think the effort will be worth it.

Blog more often. Though I have a blog, I don't post on it regularly. That has changed. Today I posted two short articles and I hope to post every other day. According to the "Google Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide," blog posts on personal websites lets visitors know you've added something new and gets the word out about content and/or services.

Offer free stuff. Everyone likes to receive free items, even me. With this thought in mind, I contacted my computer technician and asked him to post some free resources on my website. They will be drop-downs on the New Resources tab. I hope to add more free resources in the future.

Use social media. Because of my age, I didn't understand the power of social media right away. But I do now. Several times a week, I post on Facebook and LinkedIn. I'm also posting more on Twitter.

Participate in related sites. The Internet has hundreds, if not thousands, of similar sites. Use them. As the "Google Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide" explains, "Hot topics in your niche or community could spark additional ideas for content or building a good community resource. Recently I posted on Author's Den, for example.

Tap every possible network. Networking may be an old idea, but it is still a good one, and I am using it big time. I am tapping grief support networks, elder care networks, and other networks that may benefit from my books and articles. For me, tapping networks is a gradual process that began with volunteering.

Making an SEO plan helped me and it may help you. Give it a try.

Over-Optimize And Be Penalized

I assume you're familiar with the term Search Engine Optimization, aka SEO, because everyone seems to be. Well, this article will be something about SEO too, but with a twist. I want to caution readers about over-optimizing your website or blog because doing so may get you penalized by search engines.

Common Forms Of Search Engine Over-Optimization:

1. Repeating keywords or keyword phrases too often
2. Breaking up the proper flow of paragraphs in an article or post to facilitate keyword stuffing.
3. Over-emphasizing your article or post by repeatedly using text modifiers such as bold, italic or headline tags.
4. Purchasing inbound links or exchanging links with low quality sources.
5. Creating backlinks by leaving comments on blogs or forums and repeatedly using the same anchor text.

Over-optimizing will increase your organic ranking over the short term, but eventually search-engine spider bots will flag your website.

Good Optimization Practices:

1. Have unique and useful content, with proper keyword density. Unique and relevant content is one of the main factors the latest Google Panda algorithm iteration is looking for.

2. Optimize your articles by including your main keywords or keyword phrases in your title and description tags, which should also be unique for each page.

3. Include your keywords in heading tags, and at the beginning and end of your article, plus have variations of your keywords salted throughout your content. However, make sure including your keywords still allows for correct sentence structure and grammar, and that articles and posts make sense.

4. Have your keywords optimized within your URL. For Bloggers that means your permalinks should be based on your keyword or keyword phrase, and not a numbers or dates.

5. Do not link too deep, with folders containing viewable content within other folders. Use as few folders for content as possible. For example: do not have a folder structure like articles/SEO/pagename.html and another socialmedia/twitter/pagename.html, and so on. Better, go with SEO as a folder, and place every related html file there. Ditto for a folder called socialmedia. It may be easier to have folders defining the content in detail when you're looking for something, but doing so is at the expense of optimization.

6. Your articles and videos should be interlinked for related content, as well as related articles interlinked too. This will greatly help with flattening of your site architecture.

7. Have only relevant, high-quality inbound links and outbound link only to related sites with higher ranking than yours if possible.

Following these few basic guidelines of search engine optimization will earn you a decent amount of organic search engine traffic. Whereas, to over-optimize your blog or website may cause you to be penalized.

If you're guilty of over-optimization, stop doing so now and I suggest going back and editing some of your blog posts and website articles, as well as any page title and description tags that need it. I'd also recommend that as you revisit blogs or forums you have commented on previously, and used repetitive anchor links that you edit those you can, or even delete some if that is the only option available. Then, moving forward, stick to standard optimization practises and you'll most likely avoid a Google Slap or other form of penalizing for over-optimization.

Leveraging SEO Techniques For LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a professional social networking site that was launched in 2003. Since it's it's launch it has received massive praise and use within different industry sectors. Particularly within internet and technology focussed companies and roles. It has been reported that with over 150 million users, it is no match for Facebook and Twitter but it has a different use and therefore this is to be expected.

The power of LinkedIn has made it realised and is used by many companies to recruit staff by creating job listings, that have shown high success rates and also improving business networking and and ability to build of relationships that can grow and help open doors for many people. With the addition of linking social networking profiles together can enable up-to-date information and blogs reach all networks at the same time with minimal effort.

So let's focus on the benefits that improving the search engine optimisation of your current LinkedIn profiles can bring and what this will entail:

The first and foremost the most important thing is to complete your LinkedIn profile, 100%. This includes a profile image and up-to-date employment details and personal descriptions. If a company profile then this includes having all employee's in it's network. Syncing twitter or updated with regular blog posts can help promote the company's latest activity, not forgetting a website link etc...

By doing this can help improve visibility within the search engine results pages because relevant and similar information that matches your brand or personal websites will be included throughout the information.

So let's expand on the previously mentioned actions:

Each profile has the option to customise the public URL, so capitalise on this and claim your own LinkedIn personalised URL today. Because search engines use keywords within URL's there are obvious benefits over the random numbers and letters that are given after creating a new profile. Increasing the profile's ability to rank within the search engine results page for your name. Not forgetting the cleaner URL's are easier to send to people and look much better on signatures, business cards and on CV's.

LinkedIn allows links to be placed on your profile that link back to other websites, in addition these can be personalised. There is currently the space to add three websites to your profile, and a link to your twitter account. Make sure to personalise these and not to put 'My Website' or 'Company Website', try something relevant like putting the company's name.

Remember when completing your profile to include the relevant job title and location, including the relevant industry. This can help provide search engines with personalised information that helps associate with your profile. This includes making many connections, with friends and work colleagues and even former work colleagues. This will help increase your profiles outreach.

Lastly, make sure to join the many and wonderful LinkedIn groups. By interacting with industry experts help not only add relevant groups to your profile but also allow for interaction and relationships to build.

Search engine optimisation is an ever growing industry that involves many different tactics to help understand how search engine rankings are measured. But there are many already well understood measures that can be taken to significantly improve web pages improve their rankings within the search engine results pages. Try these tips and see if you can improve your own LinkedIn profile for ranking.

Make Website Content SEO Attractive To Promote Your Online Marketing Business

SEO, Search Engine Optimization is the process of enhancing the e-visibility of a site or a web page on major search engines in a very natural or un-paid way. In other words, SEO is intended to help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. in finding optimized content desired by humans.

SEO has become a buzzword in the online marketing business. SEO is designed to help search engines in giving optimized results but it does not induce searchers to take any favorable action like buying any products, signing up for subscriptions or sharing links. In fact it demands for a genuine and attractive content to get a hold of your website visitors' attention and make them engaged, drive quality traffic to your site and ultimately promoting your goods or services.

Following are the few tips to make web content SEO effective and attractive for gaining visitors' attention:

1. Make use of "You"

SEO articles, press releases, blog posts and marketing emails are all designed to foster the communication between you and your customer whether existing or prospective. Website content should resemble like you are interacting with your site's visitor over a cup of tea.

This is where the term "you" should be given the importance, which it really deserves. Because writing in the second person makes you speak to your readers on a personal note.

2. Try using simpler words

If you make use of complex words in your website content or any article or ad copy, related to your website; it generates the belief that you are trying to make your readers impress or that you are making fool of readers by acting over smartly.

This would not provide any benefit to your online business marketing campaign for the reason that it might confuse your target audience a little bit and make it hard for them in receiving what you actually wanted to deliver. This will ultimately result in your customers losing interest in your website and letting them find other sites that provide information in an easy-to-understand manner.

3. Use bullets to highlight points of import

Web surfers have very short span of interest and they take pleasure in scanning and skimming the entire content. In fact, majority of them even do not take pain in reading entire content. They only scan through it till they found something exciting to read. However, at times they do read it in full, but if and only if they find it really occupying and worthy for spending precious time on it.

You should make it simple for your readers to look into your content. You can do this by using bulleted lists to emphasize important points as this will engage your visitor in a better manner.

4. Keep your paragraphs short at length

You should fix your paragraphs to 3-4 sentences that stick to a single point at a time. This will ensure that your visitors are not bored or bewildered of what you are actually trying to mention.

At last, just keep in mind that your content is aimed at helping humans. You should make it informative, simple and easy-to-read and understand. Because in any case, SEO is ultimately designed for human expediency and to make search engines perform at its best.

1 Out of 1,400,000

I did a quick search last night for the term Indianapolis web design. In just a few seconds Google returned 1,400,000 items.
1,400,000

The sheer volume is staggering. How long do you think it would take to actually look through all those pages? I will never know, because like most  people, I rarely look past page two.

That is  the challenge for small business owners who have invested serious money in their company websites.  They are frustrated when the site doesn't appear on page one. But consider the odds. According to Netcraft, there are more than 644 million active web pages, and the number grows every month.

So is it impossible to shoot for page one? Not at all. With a large enough budget you can buy space on the top of almost any search, or you can invest the effort to move there organically.

The organic approach takes time, but provides lasting results and while some of the rules change often, the basics of good SEO strategy remain the same. SEO Success has created a checklist which is a great starting point for companies who hope to create long-term success of their natural search engine optimization efforts.

Some of the key points include:

Setup: Results take time. This is not something you can do for a few weeks. To be successful you have to commit to the long haul. Why? As soon as you stop, someone else will take your place.

Success is driven by a mixture of on-site and off-site activities.

On-Site: Create new content weekly. And if you are trying to place in a really competitive category, you may have to add content every day. Blogs, photos, testimonials and news stories all help your company gain visibility.

Off-Site: It is called the "web" for a reason. Sites are interconnected. Take advantage of this interconnection by distributing your content through many channels. Take time to comment on other blogs on related topics, look for opportunities to write guest posts, and share relevant links on social networks.

Results: Track your progress. Periodically check in and see how you are doing. Are you moving up? Review the data and make adjustments in your strategy.
Does it really work?

About a year ago I checked our position for several of our keywords. I found we typically ranked on page one for many of our most important terms.   We were, however, on page nine for the competitive phrase Indianapolis Web Design.  In addition to the business opportunities we were missing, it was clear we weren't serving the needs of our readers who come to us expecting tips and suggestions on a range of small business marketing topics.  Clearly we were focusing too much time and energy elsewhere.

So we adjusted our strategy, began writing more content on that theme.  The result?  You can often find us on the bottom of page one or top of page two alongside companies much larger than Roundpeg.  But as soon as we slacked off we slid back.  There were two  important lessons in this exercise

Ranking on competitive terms requires consistent and focused effort. You are not the only company in your industry hoping to earn that spot.Consider all your services and be sure you are touching all your topics and key words on a rotating basis.

Speed Up Your Site With Website Speed Optimization

Fast delivery in any business is the key to success. This is where the role of Website Speed Optimization in the search engine optimization fraternity lies. It describes the load time of a website. A slow website results in disappointed users and discontent for Google, Yahoo, Amazon and eBay. It is certainly annoying for web crawlers. If the bounce rate of your site is consistently high, then is better to upgrade it into a faster, efficient website. An impressive website loading time can lead to increased conversion rates, and attract the attention of more customers as well as improve the overall sales performance. Increasing Page Speed is no longer a pipe dream for ambitious online marketers, as reputed search engine marketing companies can make this task a possibility.

Needless to say, a website should be fast and efficient. Website Speed Optimization is a job best left to the professionals. These highly qualified professionals are equipped with efficient and result-oriented tools and techniques to gauge the performance of a website. Your website is the first point of interaction with potential customers. Adding these user friendly features to the website would improve its impression on the immediate market. The Page Speed Service of leading Search Engine Optimization firms can help reduce the time involved in the loading of the site and make it a popular choice for online users.

SEO - The Key to Branding and Market Share

A website is much more than what it seems to be from the outset - if you thought it was just an online brochure that people could log on to or read through, you would be missing the point that is made amply loud and clear by the concept of SEO. SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the way to leverage your website, your virtual property. Since it is your property that you have built online, it only makes sense for you to get the maximum returns from your investment, which, again, has much to do with SEO. SEO is the key to success for most enterprises, including those of the small scale sector, the medium enterprises, the retailers, the wholesalers, the manufacturers and traders, the large multi-national firms and the freelancers and professionals.

So, how does this key concept of SEO work? In essence, the guiding principle behind the idea is to maximise visitors to your website and other assets online. If you have a website, it is just one part of the whole chain of transactions that go on to make the virtual presence for your business. What good would it be to have a website that your customers and prospective clients would never know of? SEO is all about letting search engines know of your website and make them pick it up you're your target audience searches for certain keywords.

Coming to think of it, you would realise that you are certainly not alone out there in cyberspace - there are millions of virtual properties floating around out there, each of them vying for the attention of the same kind of people that you may be interested in. With so many of them out there to compete with you and with so many new websites appearing in the horizon, you would definitely not want to lose out on competition - and the way out as well as the way forward is SEO.

When there are only so many search engines and there can be only one first page, you would be well advised to embrace the concept of SEO with both your arms, helping search engines rank you among the first few results that would get you across to your customer. With time, seo would ensure that you have a constant stream of visitors on to your website, which, in turn, would help you build the brand you desire and get the market share that you have always yearned for.

SEO and the Fool's Gold Fantasy

Do you want to be on Page One of Google? Of course you do. Who wouldn't! All you have to do is believe everything you're told by the so-called SEO experts.

'Page One' is Nirvana, Utopia and the Holy Grail all rolled into one Google Street Map location where the little yellow man hovers triumphantly next to your company offices. Better change that 'yellow man' to 'solid gold man' - 24-carat success that's heading down your street some time soon. And it's all thanks to those SEO people who strode confidently into your world last week.

"We'll have you on Page One within weeks," they tell you. "We'll do some keyword research and pretty soon you'll be drowning in sales leads."

This is a beguiling scenario - and one which is probably played out thousands of times in as many businesses every week across the world. The mere mention of the word 'SEO' makes corporate eyes glaze over with dreams of world domination.

What some of the more unscrupulous SEO people fail to mention is that Page One rankings don't come easily - and certainly not where the more competitive (and therefore commercially worthwhile) keywords are concerned. They omit to mention that SEO isn't a magical 'quick fix' that will propel web pages to top rankings in a matter of weeks. They also forget to remind you that there are so many aspects to web page rankings other than placing keywords in all the right places. (That may have worked five years ago. Today, things are very different.)

The other side of this coin is that clever SEO can result in high page rankings for companies who are not necessarily the best in their field. Unfair? Yes - but it was ever thus. Just think about the big companies of ten or twenty years ago with huge advertising budgets who created massive exposure for brands that weren't necessarily 'the best'. (More about this later!)

Is Page One Always Paved With Gold?

Even when all the SEO elements are in place to give you a fighting chance in today's complex and competitive SEO environment, there is still a raft of awkward (and often unanswerable) questions that arise about the value of web page rankings.

Depending on whose research you read, the difference in click-through rates (CTRs) between a Number One ranked page on Google and the page in second place can be a massive two or three times! This difference narrows considerably between pages ranked second or third. It continues in rapidly diminishing slices to the bottom of Page One where a Number Ten ranked page is of dubious commercial value.

To give you an idea of how insignificant a number ten ranking can be: the CTR figures for a number eleven ranking - i.e. top of page two - are marginally higher simply because the eyes of the relatively few searchers who click onto page two are drawn to the top of the page!

Getting back to the top rankings of Page One... A page ranked at Number One on Google is rewarded with a 'winner-takes-all' jackpot. The value of a top-ranked page is likely to be out of all proportion to its relative 'quality', usefulness or relevance to a searcher's keyword query. Arguably, this is the biggest single flaw in the whole 'search' concept. The fact is, however, it's only human nature to click on the top-rated page because it's perceived as being 'the best'. If Google ranks it Number One (with all its sophisticated selection techniques), conventional wisdom says it MUST be the best!

What a layman wouldn't realise is that a Number One ranking may be the result of superior SEO, and nothing to do with the merits of that particular business. The other 'problem' is that, by definition, there is only one 'Number One' spot. Google has no place for 'joint second' or 'joint-anything' in its rankings! That can only be in the eye of the beholder.

Statistically, lower-ranking web pages can still attract respectable numbers of viewers and clicks. The reverence given to top pages in the web rankings may be about misplaced confidence, but all pages ranked below the top two or three positions will inevitably attract a certain degree of scepticism whose quality appeal will be compared, rightly or wrongly, in a less favourable light.

The saddest part of all this is that Google's algorithms rank pages with great accuracy - but only according to their own criteria. Can robots realistically assess product quality, for example, or amazing customer service?

Herein lies the paradox - or unfairness - of SEO. For companies whose offerings aren't necessarily the best, good SEO is worth its weight in gold. For those companies without effective SEO support (for whatever reason), the otherwise brilliant aspects of their business will go begging, in the online world at least.

Some would argue that a top-ranked site would soon be rumbled if it didn't deliver on its promises. The ultimate business truth for a top site begins to emerge with the landing page that a 'click' delivers. What first impression does the site create? More specifically, how impressive is the design, website copywriting, ease of navigation and every other aspect of usability?

This extends to the pure 'physical' contact that a prospect has with the business in terms of inter-personal chemistry and service efficiency at every stage in the sales process. Much of this lies outside the scope of SEO where the ultimate responsibility of converting leads to sales rests with the company itself.

The REAL Value of Keywords

An important question in SEO is how much intrinsic value resides in a specific keyword, and whether SEO has the potential to take everyone on a fool's errand?

When it comes to bigger companies, for instance, can a massive SEO investment in trying to achieve top ranking for almost-generic, ultra-competitive keywords be worth all the disappointment and soul-searching? Surely, in so many cases, there has to be a better way?

At the other end of the scale are smaller companies with a limited marketing budget, particularly in the business-to-business sphere. There is often a fine balance to achieve when it comes to investing in SEO for what can only be low-traffic keywords in niche sectors, even where higher gross margins per sale indicate otherwise.

Realising this, many companies will opt out of the online sales dance, or resign themselves to having a website that is little more than an 'online brochure' presence or a support mechanism for Pay-Per-Click or social media activities. Others, however, will persist in their delusion, often encouraged by SEO companies who - out of business naivety or pure self-interest - will over-promise when it comes to levels of return on investment (ROI).

Whatever the type or size of business which embarks on SEO, a Page One ranking would likely be the original aim. Raw keywords, by definition, are the online thread running through everything a company does. To achieve sales enquiries based on effective keyword selection will validate its SEO involvement. Whether it delivers on ROI or not depends on many factors outside of SEO on the one hand - but also within the scope of SEO on the other.

Despite the voices of so many SEO evangelists, the down-to-earth reality is that the online sales process is, in its essentials, no different from the bricks and mortar process - except of course in the false expectations whipped up by SEO hype.
